Beat the heat in your home this summer

Hello, heat wave! Beating the hot and sticky New England summer days doesn’t mean that you should have to run up your energy bill. An article from This Old House proposes 10 tips that cost less than $25 each that will help you keep cool and cut the costs for doing so. First up: Install a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to preset temperatures for different times of the day so that the air-conditioning is working only when you are home, or almost home, if you are planning ahead. There are $30 programmable thermostats available that will let you set four cycles that can repeat every day, and these can save up to 20% off your cooling bill. Next up on the list is setting the thermostat higher. If you have central air, set the thermostat above 78 degrees. This enables you to save 5-8% on cooling costs with each degree above that mark.
