Duckham Architecture & Interiors in Boston, Mass., specializes in custom homes and additions that reflect a reverence for traditional architecture, but also have a contemporary flair and flow to fit today's lifestyles. "We try not to have preconceived ideas about projects," says principal Kent Duckham. "We finish a project and the next one is totally something new because the next client sends us in a new direction." Duckham works closely with clients, beginning with drawing initial sketches at their dining room table. "If we spend one or two hours at the onset, working together, we can – most of the time – nail the design then and there," Duckham says. "Then it's just a matter of elaborating and perfecting." Alina Duckham, who leads the interior design team, enhances each project with sophisticated and classic style. The 10-member firm tackles a range of residential projects. "It's not based on the size and scope, it's about a good fit with potential clients," says Duckham. "Even if it's a small project, if we feel we can make a difference, we'll do it."

MEET THE LEADERS
Kent Duckham, founder and principal of Duckham Architecture & Interiors, leads the architectural design team and is involved in all aspects of the design and building process. His wife, Alina Duckham, leads the interior design team, which handles both collaborative and independent projects. The couple met at the University of Florida, where Kent earned a degree in architecture and Alina a degree in interior design. Kent also received a master's degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Both Kent and Alina worked at CBT Architects in Boston. When a few "moonlighting" projects led to bigger commissions, Kent left CBT in 1996 to start his own firm. Alina has been involved in varying degrees since the beginning, and is now on board fulltime.Duckham Architecture & Interiors
